Death by Landscape
Death by Landscape Death by Landscape is a story which is centered on a moral understanding of the surrounding world and personal feelings. A person has great connection to the outside world, the nature and other people. Also, it is important to observe how a person views their past in relation to the present because whatever happened before, has led an individual to the way they are now.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Death by Landscape specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is the case with Lois and her ââ¬Å"demonsâ⬠. She must find an outlet which will provide some form of closure to her unwanted memories, and painting serves as a reliable instrument to help deal with inner emotions. The main theme between the story and paintings is that life is a representation of all that people see. Pictures are meant to replace words, and this is done with great affect because visually, people are able to comprehend different types of unde rstanding. The same can be seen in the story, as Lois has trouble putting her feelings into words. The pain of guilt and regret make her unable to speak the words. Even if she wanted to say something, it would be impossible because Lucy is not returning, thus leaving Lois lost in the moment of the past. As Lois concentrates on painting her inner world and seeing how it reflects in her emotions, the story develops further. The mix of colors on the canvas represents the feelings that exist in Loisââ¬â¢ mind. The trauma that she has experienced long ago, does not let her go and so, she must constantly return to that time and re-live it. The experience has been such a major part of her personality that she carries it with her always, and it makes her character unique because of this (Nischik, 2000). Loisââ¬â¢ escape to a place where she can connect with Lucy is through her paintings. The landscapes can be seen as mental pictures of the episodes that took place in the past. Lois fe els guilty and sorry that Lucy went missing, and that she has not done anything about it. The overwhelming sorrow has no place to go, except onto the paintings. As a result, the paintings greatly reflect what she feels and sees as a necessary representation of the feelings towards Lucy. It is also aligned with her childhood where she was somewhat distanced from the rest of the world. She was living two lives which were visible only to her. When she grows up, the inner person emerges, and exists through paintings. Lois creates her own world where she can momentarily let go of all the frustration and focus on painting.Advertising Looking for essay on british literature? Let's see if we can help you! It is made out to be a real place where Lucy still exists, which gives Lois an ability to talk to her and exp lain her reasons. This serves as great change in Loisââ¬â¢ life because she can take a part of the pain and transform it into a deeper spiritual connection with the person she has lost (Werlock, 2009). The story Death by Landscape is a great example of how the external world is connected with the personââ¬â¢s memories, and is a form of unity with other people. It is significant that people can deliver the inner workings of the soul into the environment and share emotions by visual representations. References Nischik, R. (2000). Four Brothers Essays
Four Brothers Essays Four Brothers Paper Four Brothers Paper Essay Topic: Film Four Brothers was released in 2005 worldwide and told an amazing story about four adoptive brothers who are not blood related going through the trauma of losing their adoptive mother in a gruesome murder attack and work together to capture their mothers killer for revenge. Although these brothers are not blood related, they show the real loyalty and love of a real family. The director and producer of the movie is John Singleton who has directed many successful movie blockbusters including 2 Fast 2 Furious and Hustle Flow. The certificate of the movie is 15 with scenes of a sexual nature and strong language. This action movie keeps you at the edge of your seats impatiently waiting for more to come. The movie also brings tension and makes you feel like you have butterflies swarming in your stomach making your heart race and its a good feeling. : The movie brings scenes of humour and gets you to understand the real values of having a family because in the early stages of their life, the brothers were brought together as complete strangers and still love one another from all that time ago when they are reunited at their mothers funeral. But even as they reconnect, their main objective is to find the truth behind their moms murder. As they search out the thugs and other lowlifes who might have an idea about what really went down, it begins to dawn on the brothers that there was more to their mothers murder than meets the eye. The actors in the movie are, Mark Wahlberg, (Italian Job, The Departed) who plays Bobby Mercer, the eldest of the four and is the brother who is in control of everything and does most of the killing in the movie to try to find out who killed his mother and is always too overprotective of his younger brother Jack Mercer. Another actor in the movie is, Andre Benjamin from the world famous RB duo Outcast with his brother, Big Boi. Andre plays Jerry Mercer the 2nd oldest, who is shy businessman but very secretive brother who has hidden information from his brothers in connection to their mothers killer and also gained her $400,000 (Ã £200,000) life insurance. But what does he do with the money? Successful music artist Tyrese Gibson plays Angel Mercer and is the 3rd oldest out of the four and he is only interested in satisfying his girlfriend Sofi in the bedroom who is played by Rosarita Sofia Vergara and killing the low-life thugs in connection to their mothers murder but is so frustrated by the fact that Bobby is always having arguments with Sofi because she wont let him go out and solve the mystery murder because she wants to have dinner with him so Angel is always stuck in the middle. The youngest out of the four who is played by Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights) is Jack Mercer who hates killing and is too quiet to be able to express his feelings to his brothers. Because of this, Bobby assumes Jack is gay and calls him Jackie/Jacqueline. The movie is set in a poor and ghetto part of Detroit, with not so fortunate people and a lot of killings, pimps, stealing and many more disastrous things happening constantly. Cold and harsh colours are used to portray the citys underbelly to the crimson blood that flows after the gunfights in the city. Fortunately, the brothers are able to look after themselves but are not able to keep out of trouble. Always up to no good, you will witness the brothers breaking bones, to massacre shootouts that they get away with anyway. At the start of this promisingly exciting action movie, their mother is shot and killed in a grocery store hold up, which has more to it than it seems with a local gangster kingpin named Victor Sweet (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and a bent police officer, Detective Fowler, (Josh Charles) in connection to the murder but no one knows. Or do they? Fortunately for the brothers, they also have police connection, Detective Green, (Terrence Dashon Howard, Hustle Flow) who knows their trouble and grew up with them in the neighbourhood so lets them get away with everything through self-defence. But his life is taken when he discovers Detective Fowlers secret. The stunts are outstanding from cars flipping over to an amazing shoot out with the four brothers vs. a team of masked men who come in there 30s. Although the brothers win the shoot out, it doesnt end up all sweeter then sugar, as they will be mourning a brother, but which one? Fortunately, Four Brothers won No.1 movie Box- Office with $20.7 million. As the movie released, it became a huge achievement as Terrence Dashon Howard won the Break Through Artist Award and John Singleton won the Best Image Award. In conclusion, this winning movie has a fantastic and relieving end. The film does an admirable job of stomping on a few cinematic racial stereotypes. The good guys arent all white; the bad guys arent all black. And while no one should look to Four Brothers as a message movie, it is a gritty, absorbing film thats for the most part worth seeing. The movies is out on DVD and on Sky Movies on occasion so if you want to watch it, go to your local Blockbuster store or library and rent the DVD or buy it in your local HMV store or buy online on the internet.

Topic is going to be given in the word file Essay
Topic is going to be given in the word file - Essay Example In the course of the last two centuries, the global national incomes have significantly increased resulting in exceptionally his living standards at least as compared to retrospective civilizations. The main reason behind this exponential increment in the quality of life can be attributed to among other things the efficiency in the extraction of energy from the environment. Humanity has achieved unprecedented level of efficacy owing to technological advancement, which makes it easy for people to easily convert raw resources into inputs. Various Geologic processes and atmospheric systems such as ecosystem and animal or human societies are inherently tied together through a series of transformational energy activities operating through a complex series of feedback mechanisms that allow them to be self-regulating. The process of energy transformation thus functions throughout the biosphere so that energy can be degraded and materials can be organized in hierarchical systems of constantl y increasing spatial temporal scales (Odum and Odum, 2001). The first and cardinal rule of energy conservation states that one can either neither create nor destroy energy, at the end of the day, the energy lost is directly proportional to the among that is gained. The underlying supposition is that one cannot get anything for nothing and the consistency of energy is often described in diagrams in which the energy flowing must be accounted for within the boundaries either in form of output or storage. Secondly, the energy in an isolated system at equilibrium will investable increase over time, the key transformative agent for energy is work; therefore, dispersed energy is incapable of doing any work thus resulting to degradation in the system. The connection between energy efficiency and economic growth has been demonstrated and restated for centuries in the worldââ¬â¢s economic arena, as the countries that exploit and

Ethical issues with Facebook Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Ethical issues with Facebook - Essay Example Many comments are made on Facebook, especially on an individualââ¬â¢s personal profile. For the majority of people these comments do not resolve in conflict, specifically work-related conflict. However, it is getting more and more difficult to separate Facebook from the workplace. Employers are now utilizing Facebook as a means for hire or no hire depending on the profile. An interview may be determined by whether or not an interviewee has photos of him or herself intoxicated with supporting graphic posts that employers do not find desirable in coworkers. Likewise, a presentable profile may increase the chances of a person being hired. Employers are attempting to observe who potential hires truly are and how they carry on in their daily lives as a way to weed out problematic hires. The same is true for an employeeââ¬â¢s current boss, or employer who may keep tabs on the employee to make sure he or she is a consistently presentable person as that employee is in some way or anoth er a representation of the company. No employer wants an employee to state that they work for their company on Facebook then flood their profile with vulgar or inappropriate information. Unsuitable photos or language on Facebook is not the only concern potential applicants have when being inspected by an employer (mostly without their knowledge). Facebook gives the user the option to post their religion, race, age, health, and political views making it an unethical resource. Employers should not be granted this information as it may stipulate unjust action. The employer is open to discriminate an applicant based on this information that would otherwise not be at their disposal. ââ¬Å"It is unfair for employers, absent express permission from an employee or potential employee, to find ways to check these sites, which are created, in most cases, for friends, family, and social acquaintancesâ⬠(Marshall). Not only is that important to recognize when signing up for Facebook, but i t is also crucial to know that future employers are not the only ones who are eager to view and use an individualââ¬â¢s profile page for some thing other than what it is intended. Facebook exploited a new Terms of Service in 2009. It states: You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or th e promotion thereof. (Marshall) The ethical debate in this instance include normative, which determines the right course of action using ethics, and applied, which helps establish what feats need to take place to resolve this case. Ethics is called for in this situation because the issue involves an imposition of rights of Facebookââ¬â¢s users, which is unethical. It is unethical for two reasons. One, Facebook

If I Could tell you W. H. auden overall themes Essay Example for Free
If I Could tell you W. H. auden overall themes Essay The poem discusses a number of ideas surrounding time, and the ability to see into the future, and learn from things. It can also be seen as a love poem between Auden and his prospective lover, Kallam. It depicts a kind of wisdom, or can be seen as showing a know-it-all attitude. Conversely, it can even be seen as saying ââ¬Ëwe donââ¬â¢t know what the future may hold, just run with it. ââ¬â¢ Interesting Ideas/Features Time Time is vital to the poem, as it is what is discussed most. 1. ââ¬ËTimeââ¬â¢ Time is a proper noun whenever it is mentioned in the poem; it is personified. Time can be seen throughout the poem as something which cannot be stopped, represented by the themes of repetition and death which come up throughout. Time is made to feel almost like a God, something supernatural over which we have no control. Only it knows our future, and we can never know, only in hindsight can we help others. Even then, we cannot tell them what to do. Time is over-arching and always there, it is the essence of life and surrounds you. Time can also be seen as useless, we cannot see into the future so we might as well take risks and go for things because we never know what may happen. The reference to ââ¬Ëpayââ¬â¢ suggests death is a debt that must be paid to time, even love cannot avoid this fate ââ¬â Time is inevitable. Time is indifferent to the quarrels and fears of man, it simply progresses onwards. The impersonal nature of time is presented throughout the poem. It doesnââ¬â¢t have a personality and stays quiet and in the shadows for most of the poem. Voice 1. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ ââ¬â The poem is written in a first person narrative voice; Audenââ¬â¢s. This makes the poem intimate and personal, perhaps in an attempt to seduce his lover, Kallam. It also makes it intimate with any reader, almost as if he is trying to communicate a message with anyone who reads the poem. However, the ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ could be seen as being anyone; it could be a wise man to a young son, warning him of the perils of time and the repetition of life, or it could be from one lover to another. The voice of the poet is dominant and contrasts with the voice of time which is simply lurking in the background, quietly doing its work. The speaker blames Time for unwanted changes in life. Poetical Structure. The structure of the poem is also significant and key to its overarching meaning. ââ¬ËVilanelle Formââ¬â¢ The form of the structure is a villanelle, 19 lines long, five stanzas of three lines and one of four. Lines one and three of the first stanza appear at the end of the other stanzas. Line two in each stanza rhymes with line two in each other stanza and it ends with a rhyming couplet. This ordered structure can have a number of meanings. Firstly, it can be representative of the poet trying to make sense of time and of his relationship. Often, poets will use ordered structures to try and make things clearer and easier to understand. The poem has a definite pace, representative of the pace of time, which is constant and cannot be halted or stopped. The restrictive form of the poem contrasts against its emotional message, which is one of more unrestrictive love and a willingness to just ââ¬Ëgo for itââ¬â¢. However, it serves to remind us that time is always there and will always restrict us in some ways. The sense of urgency created from the repetition and use of enjambment conveys the true message of the poem, to love while you have the chance. Time is restrictive, so perhaps the message of the poem is that we should do our best to love and live within the restraints of time, rather than trying to supersede it. There is no definite narrative or story about the poem. The poem can therefore be seen as a skeleton or example for stories. It suggests a message though. Use of Modal Verbs, Conditionals, Imperatives and Rhetorical Questions Blah blah blah. ââ¬ËShould, couldââ¬â¢- The use of modal verbs is very important within the poem. It gives the narrative a feel of uncertainty; that even with the passage of time and the power of hindsight we cannot truly know what will happen in the future. However, this uncertainty, to Auden, perhaps doesnââ¬â¢t mean you shouldnââ¬â¢t try things in love. He hints throughout the poem to the fact that perhaps sometimes it is necessary to try things and see how they turn out. Although, he does still hint to the fact that rushing a relationship may not be the best idea ââ¬Ëperhaps the roses really want to growââ¬â¢; connoting to the growth of their relationship. They also serve as a profession of honesty, as Auden himself admits he doesnââ¬â¢t know what will happen. It can thus be seen as a love poem which offers no frilly illusions or impossible promises but is instead firmly based in reality. This contrasts heavily to the works of Keats who was often far more romantic. ââ¬ËIf we should, If I could tell youââ¬â¢ These conditional clauses have a very similar effect to the modal verbs. It points to the fact that again, nothing is certain, and sometimes it is up to us to make our own decisions rather than relying on others. It also seems like the battle against Time is hopeless, it will pass relentlessly no matter what we do. The use of ââ¬Ëweââ¬â¢ in ââ¬ËIf we shouldââ¬â¢ is also interesting. It contrasts with the more direct address Auden uses throughout the rest of the poem (favouring ââ¬ËI). It creates a feeling of confusion as to whether Auden is speaking to humans as a whole, to us directly or to his lover Kallam. It gives the poem a number of differing messages depending on how you read into it. ââ¬ËWill Time say nothing but I told you so? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬â Includes both a rhetorical question and an imperative (will). This demonstrates that despite his analysis of time and his relationship, he still doesnââ¬â¢t really understand the essence of time, as he has to ask Time itself whether it will ââ¬Ësay I told you soââ¬â¢. The voice of time itself is relatively silent throughout the poem, and Auden fears that the only thing it will say is ââ¬ËI told you soââ¬â¢, which could again relate back to the concept of hindsight. Contrasting Language ââ¬ËWeep, Decayââ¬â¢ This use of ââ¬Ëdarkââ¬â¢ and depressing language is used throughout the poem to give it a more sombre tone. However, this is juxtaposed next to the childish language associated with the carnival ââ¬Ëclowns, lions etcââ¬â¢. This could be symbolic, illustrating how the reality of time would cast fear over people if it were not for the presence of love. Love, perhaps, is one thing which can stem the flow of time and stop it becoming too depressing. The overall tone of the poem does seem somewhat pessimistic on face value, and the carnival language can be seen as rather unnerving rather than comforting. However, when looked at more deeply, there is a small amount of hope professed in the poem, no matter how small it is! The verb ââ¬Ëdecayââ¬â¢ is also significant. The decaying of leaves relates to the cyclical nature of time and death. It is unavoidable and a process that happens again and again, showing the unrelenting nature of Time. Confusing Syntax ââ¬ËBecause I love youâ⬠¦ I would let you knowââ¬â¢ ââ¬â This part of the third stanza uses complicated and confusing syntax in order to make the reader refrain, and perhaps read over it again. This therefore forces the reader to seriously contemplate what they are actually reading.

What Science Can Do :: Science Scientific Papers
What Science Can Do I argue that 'we' the public of the United States of America, do not have an exaggerated view of what science can do. To support this claim I have compared and contrasted two articles: Enemies of Promise and The Hazards of Science. Both articles cover the topic of scientific research. Both authors are accredited scientists in their own right, and are excellent examples to cite for my thesis which I believe very strongly in. Although, I disagree with some of the conclusions made in the articles, I neverless hold both authors in very high regard. Professor of microbiology and Nobel Prize winner, J. Michael Bishop continually makes the statement in his article, Enemies of Promise, that the public has exaggerated and unrealistic expectations as to what science can do; Just as physician-author Lewis Thomas asks in his article, The Hazards of Science, "are there some things in science we should not be learning about?" (238). These men both have relevant opinions about science today. I can not say that they agree with each other because their articles are structured differently. Bishop makes arguments for science while stating it's limitations; and Thomas highlights some of sciences' achievements while questioning how far science should go. In discussing the topic of science, albeit from different frameworks, they touch upon some of the same topics. Bishop alleges that, "Science, is not the exclusive source of knowledge about human existence." (256). Then sites Thomas as saying that science is "the best way to learn how the world works." As Bishop cites Thomas to make his point, they both obviously agree with this statement. However, Thomas questions the lengths that science should go to while Bishop does not. Lewis Thomas asks the central question, "are there some kinds of information leading to some sorts of knowledge that human beings are really better off not having? Is there a limit to scientific inquiry not set by what is knowable but by what we ought to be knowing? Should we stop short of learning about some things, for fear of what we, or someone, will do with the knowledge?" (237). The author then answers his own questions: No, but he qualifies his answer by stating that it is an intuitive response that he is incapable of reasoning through. I too believe that we should not place limitations on science, while admitting that it is also an intuitive response.
